Catalonian Independence
Even after the Catalan Parliament voted illegally to approve a resolution declaring
independence from Spain with a majority, the independence is still pending as the fugitive Catalan leader, Puigdemont, is in exile for illegal rebellious actions and is still vowing to lead Catalan government for independence while in Belgium. Puigdemont has now decided to step back from the presidency and stated that he will serve as president of counsel and that his MP, Jordi Sànchez, shoul

Airstrikes in Ghouta
More than 500 civilians have been killed during a week of intense bombardment directed by the Syrian government and backed by Russia in a rebel enclave near Damascus in Eastern Ghouta. Of these victims, 121 are children.
Russia has denied direct involvement while the Syrian government has denied targeting civilians, instead claiming that they are attempting to liberate the area from ‘terrorists’, a broad term which has previously been used to describe jihadist militants and

Xi Jinping
On Sunday the 11th of march, 2,964 out of China’s 1.4 bn citizens voted to change the constitution. This change abolishes the 10 year term limit for the presidency and writes the communist party’s agenda right into the constitution, meaning Xi Jinping could effectively rule for life if he wishes to do so. The move marks a daunting u-turn back towards Mao’s authoritarian regime in the 50’s, however now China is not just a backwater economy, but a global superpower. Xi Jinping’

German Coalition
Germany’s political system works on the basis of proportional representation, which means that since the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received about 35% of the votes, they received about 35% of the parliamentary seats. In order to avoid governing with a minority government and only an “acting chancellor”, CDU has been desperately trying to form coalitions (partnerships between parties). Six months after the national elections, CDU has just signed a coalition with conserva

Miami Bridge Collapse
In recent hours a bridge in Miami collapsed under its own weight. There are possible fatalities and many are already blaming accelerated construction techniques which some deemed to be unsafe. Considering the bridge was only completed this weekend it had a short life span. Emergency responders have rushed to the scene and it is still unknown how much damage had truly been done.

A reported former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the U.K. were recently poisoned, and Theresa May is saying that it is "highly likely that Moscow is behind the attack." The chemical used in the attack, May said, has been identified as one of a group of nerve agents known as Novichok. In response to this, May has announced that 23 Russian diplomats will be expelled from the country, the biggest Russian expulsion in over 30 years.

School Walkouts
Today was National Walkout Day in the USA, and thousands of students nationwide have been using their constitutional right to protest the current state of gun legislation in the country. In each timezone, the walkout began at 10.00 am and lasted at least 17 minutes - one minute per student that was killed in the recent Parkland, Florida shooting. Participants aimed to draw attention to the need for stricter gun laws. This protest was for students of all ages, with middle scho

Stephen Hawking
Today, on the anniversary of Einstein's birthday, we mourn another bright star of the scientific and mathematical world. Even though he was given a death sentence at the age of 23 because of his early-onset ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), he defied odds and lived until he became 76. This was not the only area he defied odds in: Hawking was instrumental in the work on gravitational singularity theorems, general relativity, and the prediction that black holes emit radiatio

Brexit
Brexit is quite literally the merging of the words BRitain and EXIT, which pretty much explains what it is as a basic concept. Since the vote passed (48.11%/51.89%), the UK is scheduled to officially separate from the EU at 11pm UK time on Friday, 29 March 2019.
What has happened?
Directly after the Brexit vote, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron stepped down, replaced by Theresa May, who is the current Prime Minister. After this, May called for a General Election in the

Italian Elections
Recently Italian elections resulted in “hung parliament,” or one where no single political party holds more than 50% of the seats. It still isn’t known what party will end up in power but it is likely it will be one of the two populist parties “Five Star Movement” or “the Northern League.”
