German Coalition

Germany’s political system works on the basis of proportional representation, which means that since the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received about 35% of the votes, they received about 35% of the parliamentary seats. In order to avoid governing with a minority government and only an “acting chancellor”, CDU has been desperately trying to form coalitions (partnerships between parties). Six months after the national elections, CDU has just signed a coalition with conservative Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to form what Merkel calls a “grand coalition for the little people”.
