Xi Jinping

On Sunday the 11th of march, 2,964 out of China’s 1.4 bn citizens voted to change the constitution. This change abolishes the 10 year term limit for the presidency and writes the communist party’s agenda right into the constitution, meaning Xi Jinping could effectively rule for life if he wishes to do so. The move marks a daunting u-turn back towards Mao’s authoritarian regime in the 50’s, however now China is not just a backwater economy, but a global superpower. Xi Jinping’s decision leaves us wondering whether other world leaders such as Putin, will follow his lead?
